〔Purpose〕

Although the physiologic oral malodor is generally milder than the pathologic malodor, the patients who suffer from the physiologic are bothered more seriously and privately than the other. It is thought that the anaerobes activity in the tongue plague plays major role in the physiologic malodor which the patients sense by themselves. And the reduction of oro-physiological function leads to this raising of their activity. It has scarcely been reported how oral anaerobes vary their activity before and after the therapy of oral malodor. We studied the quantitative change of anaerobe activity before and after the therapy of physiologic oral malodor by measuring the BANA hydrolysis.

〔Methods〕

95 patients were studied who chiefly complain about oral malodor and diagnosed as physiologic malodor not pathologic malodor. They visited to Higuchi Dental Clinic from September 2006 to August 2008.

We treated them with three ways. The first is to control over oral anaerobes. The second is to harmonize the systemic function related ordinary habit and recovery of oro-physiological function. The last is management of anxiety against the oral malodor.

Oral malodor associated examinations were performed three times: at their first visit, there weeks later and six weeks later. The organoleptic method and BB checker were utilized to measure oral malodor. The saliva was examined with CAT 21 and Check Buff. Anaerobes were examined with BANA perio.

  1. Through the series of therapy oral malodor was observed to significantly reduce either by sensory method or by BB checker. In salivary tests, it was observed the increasing of static salivary flow and the decreasing of precipitation. Tongue plaque was observed to tend to reduce and anaerobes also observed to reduce quantitatively.
  2. Above all, following improvements of aerobic circumstances and salivary conditions, physiological oral malodor was reduced. Therefore these methods of t
  3. Additionally, BANA test utilizing BANA hydrolysis is useful to measure the effects of the therapy.
